NS (Vincent qnd Gavin) scored the expected 4 tricks fon the Q
lead for down one, plus 100 and a 2 imp pickup on the board. The
contrat at the other table was 3NT by W down 1.
Another hand from the same match (Hand Two at right).
Vince
was playing 3NT on the efficient auction of 1NT 2

East led the 5,
4 9 2
West now returned the 6,
10, J 5
That built a few tricks for Vince but he was not yet at nine.
This hand offers a difficult squeeze with many options along the
way.
East played a second spade, 8 Q K 3 (of course the play of the
ace is trick nine but it is almost impossible to read West to
be holding exactly K9).
West continued club K, A 2 7
Vince now made the great play of the K.
East won and exited with a small club.
The best line now might be to lead a heart to the board; play
a diamond to the jack; run the clubs and there is a squeeze for
9 tricks. There are many options at this point. The match was
under time pressure and given that this was Board 19 Vince had
to make a decision. (Note that this hand took over 20 minutes
to play.)
Vince now played a heart to the board and led the
Q, K A 3.
Under tremendous time pressure Vince now cashed the Diamond jack
and the hand was over, down 1 for a push. I firmly believe
that had he more time he would have solved the hand.
This rather difficult hand was very entertaining to watch and
the vugraph crowd was hoping that Vince would solve it.
