The
9th World Youth Bridge Team Championship (26 years old and under)
will be held in Saint Cloud, a picturesque and historic town on
the western outskirts of Paris, from 18 to 28 August 2003.
The
Championship consists of a qualifying stage, semifinals, a final
and a playoff for third place. The winners of the final will be
the new World Junior Champions; they will receive the Ortiz-Patiño
Trophy and silver replicas for each player and the non-playing
captain. Those failing to qualify will be able to participate
in a Swiss Pairs contest to be arranged exclusively for young
people. Canada
is sending one team. See left.
This
is the ninth event of the series that was inaugurated in 1987
in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. As a biennial competition, it was
held in 1989 in Nottingham, Great Britain; in 1991 in Ann Arbor,
Michigan, USA; in 1993 in Århus, Denmark; in 1995 in Bali,
Indonesia; in 1997 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada; in 1999 in Fort
Lauderdale, Florida, USA, and in 2001 in Mangaratiba, Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. The host country won the Championship on the first three
occasions, but this tradition was broken in 1993 by Germany. In
1995, Great Britain became the first country to win the title
twice. Denmark won the title in 1997 and Italy in 1999. The reigning
World Youth Champions are the United States of America.

The
August 11 junior auction/fund raiser at Kate Buckman's
Bridge Studio was very successful. $3,200 was collected for the
2003 Canadian Junior Team. The Toronto team members (David Grainger,
Charles Halasi, Daniel Lavee, Gavin Wolpert), NPC Martin Hunter,
Eric Kokish, Hazel & Darren Wolpert, Nader Hanna, Jonathan
Steinberg, Roy Hughes, Ben Zeidenberg, Beverly Kraft Kokish, and
Andy Stark were all purchased for the evening. John Gowdy was
the auctioneer who also bought a partner for the evening. Eric
Murray and Unit 166 President Barbara Sims were both in attendance
as buyers. Eric Murray wisely bid on Daniel Lavee and they emerged
as the overall winners of the bridge game. Black Forest cake and
chocolate mousse were served by the bridge club. A great time
was had by all. More money will be raised this evening at Doubles
Duplicate Bridge Club. ... Jonathan
