CBF JUNIOR NEWS

Nader Hanna has been appointed the new CBF Junior Manager, effective immediately. Over the next few months, Nader will be in contact with all the Canadian junior players. Working with Eric Kokish, he will plan a training program that will lead to the selection of the 2008 Canadian Junior Teams. The selection criteria are a work in progress.

Erin Berry Memorial Fund Report
This fund was established in 2001 as a trust fund set up by Erin Berry's father, Larry Berry. The Trust Account is meant to help Junior players 19 or younger with expenses incurred to attend bridge events.

The Trustees of the Erin Berry Memorial Fund met in Montreal in May and made the following grants to Canadian Youth Bridge players:

Tom Walsh of Saskatoon, SK
$900 to attend the Youth NABC in Atlanta
in July 2008

John Maguire of Moncton, NB
$750 to attend the Youth NABC in Atlanta
in July 2008

Jonathan Pugsley of Riverview, NB
$750 to attend the Youth NABC in Atlanta
in July 2008

Tyler Miton of Riverview, NB
$750 to attend the Youth NABC in Atlanta
in July 2008

The Trustees also set aside $6,500 for requests for financial help from eligible youths attending the 2009 FISU World Bridge Championships in Poland in September and the 1st World Mind Sport games in Beijing, China in October.

Junior Games on Bridge Base Online
Every second sunday of the month a pairs championships for students and youth on BBO. Games can be as big as 130 pairs. All information about it is on www.unibridge.org. Note, BBO is now cross-platform with the new BBOTV which allows play without having to download software. Perfect for mac users, but also for playing from libraries and cyber cafes that do not allow downloads.

Erin Berry Fund Deadline : May 15
This fund was established in 2001 as a trust fund set up by Erin Berry’s father, Larry Berry. The Trust Account is meant to help Juniors 19 or younger with expenses incurred to attend bridge events. The Memorial Fund will be used to help subsidize Youth Category Canadian players, who are members of the CBF, for bridge related activities. In no case will any individual receive more than 75% subsidy to the bridge activity. More info here

Le Fonds commémoratif Erin Berry : Le Fonds Erin Berry est un fonds fiduciaire qui a été mis sur pied par Larry Berry (le père d’Erin Berry) en 2001. Le Fonds est utilisé pour attribuer des subventions aux jeunes bridgeurs canadiens (âgés de 19 ans et moins), membres de la Fédération canadienne, pour toute activité reliée au bridge. En aucun cas, un individu ne pourra recevoir une subvention couvrant plus de 75% des frais encourus pour une telle activité. Pour faire une demande de subvention au Fonds commémoratif Erin Berry, il faut remplir une demande d’application et la soumettre à la Secrétaire-Trésorière de la FCB avant le 15 mai de chaque année. KEITH VEALE : Canada’s Youngest LM

Keith Veale, of Ottawa ON, has broken the Canadian record for youngest Life Master. Veale, who earned his gold card at the age of 12 years, 10 months, broke the record previously held by Ottawa neighbor David Sabourin, whose record was 14 years, 11 days in 1998. Veale started playing three years ago with his grandfather, Brian. He is in the seventh grade at D. Roy Kennedy Public School.
