TOURNAMENT DIARY: Friday, Aug 22
Ed Antosz, junior team manager

This is a big day for us, a do or die day. Our team had a good opening and then a few rocky matches but finished strong yesterday. This morning we are playing Poland and then Denmark this afternoon on vugraph. We need to win big this morning and then do well against the Danes. Our third match is against Chile but we are favourites to win that one, and win we must. The end of the day will see a realignment of the standings and hopefully we will be moving up.

HAND ONE: As North you pick up 6 1073 Q10987532 A - what is your opening bid non vul against vul? While many chose a 4 opening in the first round match, Ian Boyd selected the magical 5. The whole auction was : 5D p p x and Ian took 11 tricks when East failed to find a heart lead.

HAND TWO: Another interesting tale from the same match against Australia came on board 8. (See Hand Two at right)

West is dealer with no one vul. The auction began

1D 2C P P

The 2c bid was alerted by south to west (Gavin Wolpert) as "We overcall on s***."

The auction concluded

X P P P

and when the dust had settled Canada was plus 1100 on the hand. This was a 12 imp gain as the final contract at the other table was 3NT making 4.

More tomorrow. (or later).......
