Patrick
O'Neil began playing bridge in 1966 while attending St Mary's
University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When asked for a bit of personal
bridge history, this is what he told us: "I played with a group
of Chinese students from Hong Kong, whenever they needed a 4th.
I didn't play duplicate bridge until 1979. My wife and I were teaching
on an isolated First Nations reserve, north of Prince Rupert. As
a birthday present she flew into Prince Rupert with me to play in
a qualifying game for the B.C. Northern Winter Games. We won the
qualifier and then won the gold medal at the games. For the next
10 years after that I played in as many sectional and regional tournaments
as I could, but not nearly as many as I wanted to, including events
in Prince George, Vancouver, Ketchikan, Alaska and Spokane, Washington.
A young growing family limited how much I could play then. Over
the past few years, back problems have made it difficult to sit
for long, or to travel, so I have cut back significantly on my playing
time. I do play at home on computer, both at Yahoo and at the new
e-bridge site."
Patrick
tells us his partner in this event, Coletta Gerard, plays
absolutely no conventions and told him if he wanted to be in slam
he would have to bid it because she would go no higher than game.
We are still hoping to get a picture and more information about
Coletta. Check back!
