Demirev,
L’Ecuyer capture IMP Pairs
First-time partners Nikolay Demirev and Nicolas L’Ecuyer
had some ground to make up after the first final session
of the Lebhar IMP Pairs, but they posted a huge score in the second
final to win by nearly 11 IMPs. Demirev, of the Chicago suburb
of Arlington Heights, and L’Ecuyer, of Montreal, were plus
55.59 IMPs over 26 deals to earn the victory. Second place went
to Greg Hinze of San Antonio TX and Nagy Kamel of Plano TX. Demirev
and L’Ecuyer had never played together before the Houston
NABC, and their first outing was in the Vanderbilt Knockout Teams.
Both have won North American championships, Demirev the IMP Pairs
in 2004 and the Nail Life Master Open Pairs in Boston last fall.
L’Ecuyer won the Fast Open Pairs in Chicago in 2006. Demirev
teaches English as a second language in Chicago. L’Ecuyer
is a money manager for Giverny Capital Inc. in Montreal. They
played a more or less natural system with many custom gadgets. Article

More Units Step Up to Help International
Fund and their Players
In 2007 there was an increase in the number of Sectional
Tournaments holding International Fund Games. These Sectional
International Fund games are very popular with the players as
they award Silver Master Points at Regional Rating instead of
Sectional Rating. This means the players earn 1.4 times as many
Masterpoints. The CBF benefits as these games help raise funds
to support our Canadian representatives at World Championship
events.
Zone V Challenges all other Zones in Canada
In 2007, seven of the 10 Sectional Tournaments in Canada that
held International Fund Games were from Zone V. Zone V would like
to challenge all other Zones in Canada to beat this record in
2008. Talk to your Tournament Coordinators and get them to make
some International Fund games at your Sectionals. Can your Zone
step up to this challenge?

John W iser (1926-2004):
John Wiser, the first Canadian National Tournament Director, passed
away last month at the age of 77. An excellent player before he
turned to directing, he was promoted to that position in 1969.
In addition to his work with the ACBL, he was a longtime official
at World Bridge Federation tournaments. Johnny was best known
for his pleasant demeanor and excellent people skills. This made
him the number one choice to deal with players wanting to complain
or appeal a director’s ruling. It was remarkable how often
he could get the complainants to leave smiling. Well Johnny, now
you are the one who has gone but all of us will always have smiles
on our faces when we think of you. Contributed by Henry Cukoff
