24 clubs took part in our annual Helen Shields Rookie-Master Game. The Bridge Centre of Niagara had the highest turn out with 54 pairs playing off at their games. The Ottawa Bridge Centre came in second with 49 pairs. The Gatineau Bridge Club had 48 Pairs, the Vancouver Bridge Centre had 45 pairs and the North Bay DBC had 44 pairs. Jim Priebe, Ray Jotcham and Steve Mackay did the analysis for this game.

We had a total of 313 tables or 626 pairs in play. Disappointing was that fact that 9 bridge clubs, that had applied for the game and received game supplies, did not hold games.

Helen Shields sister plays in Ottawa

Jane Deptuck, who is Helen Shields daughter, contacted the Ottawa Bridge Centre in March to let them know that her aunt, Jess Cook (who is Helen Shields only surviving sister) had recently moved to Ottawa and played bridge. At 86 years young, Jess would be honoured to have an opportunity to play as a rookie in the up-coming Helen Shields Rookie-Master Game. The Ottawa Bridge Centre came through in flying colours and partnered Jess with Colin Brody. The club also presented Jess with a bouquet of flowers.

A nice story, one that does makes the Helen Shield's rookie master Tourney and Ted "Action" Jackson memories make the heart go pump, pump.... by Paul Hardy and Elizabeth Scott

Ted was a wonderful man, aptly named "Action" for his table action, but it was more for his fascination for bridge conventions, books and the love for the game that most would never know. One year, Ted offered to play the Helen Sheilds Rookie Master game with an 11 year old. They didn't win, but the fun and stories from that game encouraged that 11 year old's love for the game as much as Ted's.

Ted passed away years ago, and left his extensive bridge library to that 11 year old – hundreds of bridge books on conventions, play, and defence. That "rookie" 11 year old was David Sabourin. David went on to be the youngest life master in Canada at 14, and will be trying out for the Canadian Junior team this May in Kingston at 19 years old. Ted would be proud, but even more proud to know that David talked to me and his mother, Elizabeth Scott and told us he was making the commitment of playing with a Rookie every Helen Shields Rookie master game in Memory of Ted "Action" Jackson and for everything Ted did for him.

So to all those Ted "Action" Jackson's and to Helen Shield's for helping us nurture our rookies. We thank you.

Congratualtions to our National Winners.
