BACKGROUND

The 2003 CWTC winners were required to playoff against the 2002 CWTC winners in much the same fashion as the CNTC this year. The CBF has changed over to an in-year selection process for our international teams and in order to make the shift, devised a transistion period which included years 2002 and 2003. Previously, the team from the current year would be 'team canada' for the following year. To make the change, the teams winning the CWTC from 2002 and 2003 would playoff to become the current year's 'team canada'. From 2004 onward, the CWTC winner will be the 'team canada' for that year. The GORDON team was victorious in that playoff (see CWTC) and now moves into a playoff with Mexico to win the right to represent Zone 2 in the World Bridge Federation at the world championships this November.

CANADA WINS PLAYOFF
WITH MEXICO
for berth in the Venice Cup

August 24 :: The women played off in Toronto, at the Intercontinental Hotel on Bloor Street.

Mexico (Alicia Duran, Nancy Lira, Nancy Gerson, Magy Mohan, and Miriam Rosenberg) played a fantastic weekend, leading for much of the event.

Losing the lead in segment 4, Team Canada was 48 vps behind after today's first segment. The team had to pull one of their trademark steamrollers out of the closet and they didn't disappoint, winning 44, 50, and 45 in the final three segments. Even so, they didn't break into the lead again until S8, keeping thousands of internetters across the country gripping the edges of their seats.

Canada won the match by 17vps. Congratulations to all.
